Job Description

The D. E. Shaw group is a global investment and technology development firm with more than $90 billion in investment capital as of March 1, 2026, and offices in North America, Europe, and Asia. Since our founding in 1988, our firm has earned an international reputation for successful investing based on innovation, careful risk management, and the quality and depth of our staff. We have a significant presence in the world's capital markets, investing in a wide range of companies and financial instruments in both developed and developing economies.

We are looking for candidates to join our Reinsurance team based in Hyderabad. The team partners closely with underwriters to support catastrophe modeling across insurance, reinsurance, and retrocession contracts, and contributes to analytical and operational workflows across the firm's reinsurance activities.

WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

In this role, you will undertake catastrophe modeling to understand and analyze the underlying risk and calculate expected loss on a per-contract and portfolio basis, using a combination of vendor and proprietary tools and techniques. You will develop a sound understanding of various reinsurance structures (per occurrence, XOL, aggregate, etc.), instrument types such as industry loss warranties, cat bonds, reinsurance and retrocession contracts, and natural catastrophe modeling software(s), staying current on model updates and their impact on results. You will interact directly with brokers on the modeling of contracts and work closely with underwriters across different offices, providing meaningful and actionable analytical support that feeds directly into business decisions. You will undertake portfolio maintenance by incorporating deal flow and generating portfolio reports on a regular basis. You will also monitor natural catastrophes occurring across the globe on a daily basis, along with an assessment of their impact on the portfolio and report findings to underwriters. You will verify and maintain claims-related information and generate reports as needed. You will also contribute to building new analytical tools and optimizing existing processes, with direct impact on the efficiency of the team's workflows.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Basic qualifications:

  • A master's degree in finance or equivalent, with up to 0-2 years of work experience in any analytical role.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or SQL
