The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Optometrist to join the Ophthalmology Medical Retina Team within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

This unique permanent part-time role offers the opportunity to become part of an established team of approximately 40 Optometrists working across eight Ophthalmology departments throughout Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

You will primarily work within the Medical Retina service managing patients with diabetes, while also supporting the development of junior colleagues through clinical supervision and appraisal. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Optometrist looking to further their career within the Hospital Eye Service.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is a permanent post working part-time hours (3.75)
These hours will be worked from 09.00 - 12.45
This post is based at Gartnavel General Hospital however, your clinic will be on a Thursday morning at New Victoria Hospital. You may be required to work at other sites as the role/service develops.
Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part-time hours.

Key Responsibilities

Working within the Ophthalmology Medical Retina Team, you will provide specialist assessment and management of patients with diabetes, delivering high-quality clinical care within the Hospital Eye Service.

You will undertake managerial responsibilities, including completing Turas appraisals for junior staff, and provide clinical supervision to Pre-Registration Optometrists and Healthcare Support Workers.

You will contribute to the ongoing development of the service and may have opportunities to rotate into other core Optometry clinics and extended Ophthalmology roles as they become available. Comprehensive training will be provided to support your continued professional development.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Degree in Optometry.
Current registration with the General Optical Council (GOC).
Proven clinical experience in the management of patients with diabetes (essential).
Postgraduate qualification in diabetes, or equivalent clinical experience, is desirable.
Experience working within a Hospital Eye Service is desirable.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
Experience of supervising or supporting junior staff is desirable.
Willingness to travel across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde sites as required.
