Job Description Tool Room Head
Position: Tool Room Head (Press Shop)
Department: Tool Room
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage overall Tool Room operations to ensure uninterrupted tool and die availability for production.
- Oversee tool design, development, modification, and preventive/breakdown maintenance of dies, jigs, and fixtures.
- Ensure effective use of Tool Room machines such as lathe, milling, grinding, EDM, CNC, and wire cut machines.
- Plan and conduct tool trials, support new tool development, and ensure adherence to project timelines.
- Monitor tool life, calibrate measuring instruments, and ensure dimensional accuracy of dies using Vernier, Micrometer, Height Gauge, Profile Projector, and CMM.
- Identify and resolve tooling-related defects, root causes, and corrective actions.
- Drive compliance with safety standards and maintain 5S discipline across Tool Room operations.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, 5S, SMED, 3M, waste reduction).
- Manage raw material specifications, identification, and optimum use for tool making.
- Handle inspection of tool parts, read and interpret control plans, drawings, and GD&T.
- Monitor inventory, consumables, and production booking through SAP/ERP.
- Track OEE, MTTR, MTBF for tools and dies and initiate corrective measures.
- Manage manpower in Tool Room, ensuring skill development, shift planning, and accountability.
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of tool & die design, press tools (progressive, transfer), jigs & fixtures.
- Hands-on expertise in Tool Room machinery operations.
- Good knowledge of raw material specifications for tool making.
- Familiarity with inspection methods, part inspection reports, rejection/rework handling.
- Understanding of 4M management, 10-cycle checks, and quality systems.
- Proficiency in SAP/ERP for production and consumable booking.
- Practical knowledge of 5S, 3M, 7 Wastes, and Kaizen identification.
- Strong leadership and manpower handling skills.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Diploma / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Tool & Die Making.
- 812 years of Tool Room experience, including 35 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in Press Shop-based manufacturing is mandatory.
