Job Title: SQL Database Developer

What the day will look like

The Database Developer acts as a senior member of the Technology Capabilities Group within Aon IT and is responsible for the overall design, development, test, release, maintenance, and technical support of data and reporting applications. This role is also responsible for working with Information Technology Infrastructure Services to ensure server platform and security needs of data and reporting systems are met. You'll be working in a team-based, Agile Scrum development environment where you will find yourself doing the following types of work:

  • Design, development, test, release, maintenance, and technical support of custom data applications such as data pipelines/ETLs/data processing/APIs + data analysis reports and dashboards using Power BI and paginated reports using SSRS
  • Working with Aon Data Architects to performs data modelling and database design for data and reporting applications as well as other applications as needed. Evaluate techniques and design patterns and make recommendations that will improve solution delivery. Perform solution assessment and conducts proof of concept to guide technical implementation as needed.
  • Performing analysis, design and implementation of data migration as needed and participate in design/code reviews.
  • Performing SQL Server database administration in the development (all lower lifecycles) environment and defining physical server environment including capacity planning for custom applications.
  • Work with Aon application dev., teams and creates deployment packages and instructions for releasing data and reporting applications across environments. Documents data and reporting application implementations, configurations, and support requirements as needed.
  • Corrects reported incidents on data and reporting applications and releases fixes through the change control processes.
  • Administers Power BI Online environment including managing security, data gateways, and workspaces.
  • Design and architect ETL solutions as part of a cross-functional team

Skills and experience that will lead to success

Key technical skills for this role include:

  • 6 or more years of experience in the solution development life cycle for developing and maintaining data processing and reporting applications.
  • Extensive experience with:
    • System analysis and design
    • Data analysis and data reporting
    • Relational and multi-dimensional data modeling (OLTP/OLAP)
    • Performance tuning and database design for SQL Server
    • Building Operational Data Stores, Data Marts, and/or Data Warehouses
    • Working with non-relational data sources such as flat files, excel files, JSON files, and APIs
  • Proficient in developing solutions using SQL Server, T-SQL, Stored procedures, SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS and in developing data models and reports with Power BI.
  • Knowledgeable in data integration and/or data migration design and implementation, data management principles and best practices, and the architecture and design of Business Intelligence solutions.
  • Proficient in performing system and/or integration testing.

More general skills and experience that are important:

  • Proficient in applying critical thinking skills in problem solving.
  • Strong knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Familiar with the design and application of software design pattern.
  • Working knowledge of agile methodologies.
  • Experienced in working with virtually located teams (global teams)
  • Skilled in communicating with functional teams of different technical experience.
