Role overview
As an SQL Database Administrator at PolicyBazaar, you will own the relational database environments that support critical business applications (insurance/finance domain). You'll be responsible for ensuring high availability, optimal performance, strong security, efficient backups/disaster recovery, and collaborating with dev/ops teams to align database operations with business goals.
Key responsibilities
- Administer, monitor and maintain production and non-production SQL Server (or chosen RDBMS) instances, ensuring uptime, reliability and performance.
- Design and implement database architectures: sizing, capacity planning, index strategy, partitioning, high-availability/replication/failover as appropriate.
- Perform performance tuning & optimization: query tuning, execution plans, index optimisation, configuration changes, storage/I/O tuning.
- Define, implement and test robust backup, restore and disaster-recovery strategies, in line with business RPO/RTO targets.
- Enforce database security policies: manage user roles/permissions, encryption, auditing, vulnerability management.
- Manage database deployments, versioning, change-control, patching/upgrades and configuration management in coordination with DevOps/Infrastructure teams.
- Work closely with development teams during design and release cycles: review database design/schema, give feedback on query/stored proc performance and best practices.
- Monitor database health proactively: resource usage (CPU/memory/I/O), alerts, logs/traces, and take preventive actions to avoid downtime or degradation.
- Document standards, runbooks, procedures, and provide knowledge-transfer/mentoring to more junior DBAs.
- Stay current with database technologies, industry best practices (on-premises and cloud), and drive continuous improvement.
Required skills & experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science / Information Systems or equivalent.
- 4-6 years hands-on experience as an SQL Database Administrator (or equivalent relational DB role) in a production environment.
- Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server (versions e.g. 2016/2019/2022) or relevant relational DBMS in enterprise scale.
- Proven track record in performance tuning (query, index, configuration), capacity/storage/I/O planning.
- Solid experience in backup & recovery strategies, disaster-recovery planning, high-availability technologies (Always On, clustering, mirroring, replication).
- Knowledge of database security: user/role management, encryption, audit logging.
- Comfortable with scripting/automation for DBA tasks (T-SQL, PowerShell, Python or similar).
- Experience working in DevOps/CI-CD environments (automated deployments, version control for DB artifacts).
- Good communication & collaboration skills able to interface with development, infrastructure and business stakeholders.
