About the Role:

The Senior Software Engineer plays a critical role in designing and building scalable software systems that solve complex business and technical challenges. What makes this position unique is the breadth of the technology landscape you will work across. Stolt-Nielsen operates a diverse portfolio of business-critical applications — ranging from legacy systems built on Java and .NET to modern cloud-native platforms on Node.js and Azure PaaS. You will move fluidly between these worlds: maintaining and modernizing legacy applications, while simultaneously building new solutions on modern stacks.

Across our Tankers, Terminals, and corporate functions, we are actively modernizing our portfolio of business applications that are at the heart of our operations — business planning tools, customer and partner portals, terminal management systems, financial systems, and integration layers. You will work on multiple systems, with different teams, and on varying technology stacks. This requires a versatile engineer who thrives on variety, picks up new codebases quickly, and brings a consistent standard of quality regardless of the technology.

You will be part of a global business-led product organization that operates with a DevOps mentality. It is a collaborative, diverse, fast-paced environment. The role is hands-on and requires autonomy, innovation, and collaboration, with a strong focus on clean, maintainable, and high-performance code.

You are also responsible for contributing to the overall architecture and strategy of technical systems, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring solutions are aligned with Stolt-Nielsen's business and technical goals.

What You'll Do:

• Lead design, development, and deployment of software across multiple technology stacks (Java, .NET, Node.js) depending on the system and business need.
• Develop full-stack solutions using modern frameworks and platforms, while also maintaining and improving legacy applications.
• Support and drive modernization efforts — migrating legacy systems to cloud-native architectures, refactoring monoliths, and replacing outdated technologies with modern equivalents.
• Contribute to system architecture, infrastructure design, and service-oriented approaches across different parts of the portfolio.
• Guide junior engineers and conduct peer reviews to maintain code quality across all stacks.
• Collaborate with DevOps engineers to ensure seamless CI/CD integration and deployment automation.
• Leverage AI-enabled development tools (Cursor, Claude Code) to accelerate development, improve code quality, and drive efficient problem-solving.
• Drive innovation by recommending new technologies, frameworks, and tools — and by identifying modernization opportunities in the existing landscape.
• Document systems, APIs, infrastructure, and architecture decisions (C4 model).
• Take full ownership of deliverables, resolving complex challenges with innovative and reliable solutions.
• Perform additional duties and strategic projects as assigned.

What You'll Bring:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience in software development and system design, with proven experience across multiple technology stacks.
• Professional experience in both Java and C# / .NET is required — you don't need to be an expert in both, but you must be comfortable working in either.
• Experience with modern front-end frameworks (Angular, React, or similar) and TypeScript.
• Proven experience delivering scalable, reliable, and secure software in cloud or hybrid environments.
• Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with distributed systems, containerization technologies (such as Docker or Kubernetes), and microservices architectures.
• Experience with legacy codebases and modernization strategies (strangler fig, incremental migration, re-platforming).
• Experience in CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and Agile delivery.
• Comfort with AI-augmented development workflows — using tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot as part of your daily practice.
• Strong analytical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
