WSP India is seeking a highly experienced for a Senior Geochemist / Mine Water Quality Modeller to join our GCC team supporting the Australia Mining & Metals business. In this role, you will support Australian mining projects through geochemical assessment, mine water quality prediction, hydrogeochemical interpretation, water quality modelling and environmental approvals support.

You will work closely with Australian technical leaders and multidisciplinary project teams to support studies across the mining project lifecycle, including baseline assessment, operations, environmental approvals, mine closure and post-closure water quality prediction.

The role will involve developing and reviewing technical approaches, models, reports, regulatory submissions and other project deliverables. You will also help coordinate work with other disciplines, mentor junior team members and contribute to practical, high-quality outcomes for mining clients. The position will be for Mumbai/ Bangalore location.

Responsibilities

The Senior Geochemist / Mine Water Quality Modeller Engineer shall have experience mainly in following

  • Develop and review scopes of work, schedules and budgets for geochemistry, mine water quality and environmental assessment tasks.
  • Support mine water quality prediction studies, including geochemical interpretation, hydrogeochemical assessment and water quality modelling.
  • Develop, direct and review assessment approaches for mining projects, including model development, calibration, validation and sensitivity assessment.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, memoranda, presentations, regulatory submissions and other project deliverables.
  • Manage, analyze and interpret measured and modelled water quality, geochemical and environmental monitoring data.
  • Provide quality control and technical review for data collection, data management, modelling assumptions and reporting outputs.
  • Support geochemical assessment of mine materials, including waste rock, tailings, pit environments and other mine-related sources that may influence water quality, where relevant to project scope.
  • Contribute to Mine closure and post-closure studies where long-term water quality prediction, water management or geochemical risk assessment is required.
  • Work with multidisciplinary project teams to support environmental approvals, permits, water licenses and regulatory submissions for mining projects.
  • Coordinate with Australian technical leads, project managers and discipline teams to deliver work within agreed scope, budget, schedule and quality expectations.
  • Supervise, train and mentor junior and intermediate staff to develop technical, project delivery, consulting and decision-making capability.
  • Promote a strong culture of health, safety, quality and practical project delivery.
  • Support client relationships and business development opportunities by contributing technical input to proposals, project discussions and capability material

Key Competencies / Skills


  • Experience supporting environmental assessment, permitting, approvals or regulatory submissions for mining or industrial projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical tasks, coordinate inputs from others and deliver work products in a timely manner within a consulting environment.
  • Excellent technical writing, data interpretation and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management, technical review and quality assurance capability.
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary and geographically distributed teams, including collaboration with Australian project teams and technical leaders.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and maintain flexibility across multiple projects.
  • Experience mentoring junior or intermediate staff and supporting capability development within a technical team.

Desirable Technical Experience


Mining geochemistry and mine water quality

  • Acid rock drainage / acid and metalliferous drainage assessment.
  • Static and kinetic geochemical characterization.
  • Waste rock and tailing geochemistry.
  • Pit lake, seepage, groundwater or surface water quality prediction.
  • Mine closure water quality assessment and long-term water quality risk interpretation.
  • Reactive transport or hydrogeochemical modelling.

Software and modelling tools

  • Experience with one or more relevant geochemical, water quality or hydrogeological modelling tools such as PHREEQC, Gold Sim, Geochemist's Workbench, MIN3P, MODFLOW, FEFLOW or equivalent software.
  • Experience managing, checking and interpreting measured and modelled datasets, including clear documentation of assumptions, limitations and conclusions.

Qualifications


  • A university bachelor's or master's degree in Geochemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydrogeology, Geology, Water Resources, Chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8-12 years of relevant experience, ideally with mining, consulting, environmental assessment or mine water quality project experience.
  • Proven experience in water quality modelling and interpretation, preferably in a mining, hydro geochemistry or environmental geochemistry context.
  • Strong understanding of mine water quality prediction, geochemical assessment, hydrogeochemical processes and mining-related environmental practices.
  • Experience with projects in Australia, New Zealand would be an advantage.
  • Professional Membership & qualifications CENG/PENG of relevant professional bodies is desirable.
