About This Role

MSPowerhouse is hiring a Senior Data Engineer & BI Reporting Lead to drive a client engagement end-to-end, from discovering source systems and building reliable data pipelines to delivering production-ready Power BI reports and dashboards.

This role requires someone who is both technically strong and comfortable working directly with stakeholders during discovery sessions to understand reporting needs, define timelines, identify dependencies, and deliver clean, accurate, business-ready reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end data engineering and reporting efforts, from source-system discovery through final Power BI report delivery.
  • Pull data from multiple source systems including databases, APIs, flat files, cloud storage, SharePoint, Excel, and other business applications.
  • Design, build, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, SQL, Python, or equivalent platforms.
  • Create and maintain structured data layers (raw, staged, curated, and reporting-ready datasets).
  • Build scalable data models for reporting, including fact tables, dimension tables, lookup tables, relationships, calculated fields, and KPI logic.
  • Develop and optimize Power BI semantic models, dashboards, paginated reports, and interactive reports.
  • Write advanced SQL for data extraction, transformation, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Create DAX measures, Power Query transformations, calculated columns, and report-level business logic.
  • Validate report data against source systems using row counts, reconciliation checks, KPI comparisons, and business-rule validation.
  • Troubleshoot data refresh failures, performance issues, gateway issues, source-system changes, and report discrepancies.
  • Conduct discovery sessions with business users to define reporting requirements, data sources, filters, KPIs, visuals, and acceptance criteria.
  • Estimate timelines and level of effort for reporting requests post-discovery.
  • Document data pipelines, data models, report logic, assumptions, dependencies, and known limitations.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and client stakeholders to track tasks, blockers, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Support ongoing enhancements, maintenance, and reporting changes throughout the engagement.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, business intelligence, analytics engineering, or related roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Power BI, including Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, semantic models, DAX, Power Query, dashboards, and scheduled refresh.
  • Strong SQL skills, including joins, stored procedures, views, performance tuning, data validation, and complex reporting queries.
  • Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines from multiple data sources.
  • Experience with Microsoft data tools such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL, Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, Logic Apps, or Azure Functions.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling concepts, including star schema, fact/dimension modeling, normalization, denormalization, and reporting-ready datasets.
  • Ability to troubleshoot data issues from source system to final report.
  • Experience integrating data from APIs, databases, files, and cloud platforms.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical deliverables.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and own deliverables with minimal supervision.

Preferred Skills

  • Microsoft Fabric experience.
  • Azure Synapse or Databricks experience.
  • Python for data transformation, automation, or validation.
  • Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, REST APIs, SharePoint, and enterprise reporting systems.
  • Experience working in government, defense, GCC High, or regulated environments.
  • Experience with Power BI governance, workspace management, row-level security, and deployment pipelines.
  • Microsoft certifications such as PL-300, DP-203, DP-600, or Fabric Analytics Engineer.

What You'll Get at MSPowerhouse

  • Direct client impact. Your dashboards and pipelines drive real executive decisions, not internal reports that sit on a shelf.
  • Technical depth. We work across the full Microsoft data stack (Azure, Fabric, Synapse, Power BI), not just surface-level reporting.
  • Ownership. You lead the engagement, not just execute tickets.
  • Growth. Exposure to diverse industries.
  • A team that values engineering excellence, clear communication, and doing the work right.
