Job Purpose
Design and develop mechanical systems including enclosures and complex mechanisms for a point of-care diagnostic device that processes diverse biological samples. Ensure robust, ergonomic, and manufacturable integration of hardware with optical, fluidic, and electronic subsystems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design device housing and mechanisms that accommodates all subsystems while protecting sensitive components from impact, moisture, and contaminants.
- Develop mechanical interfaces such as cartridge slots, hinges, latches, and other user-operated parts.
- Design and Develop Test kits that work in tandem with the devices.
- Ensure structural integrity under drop, vibration, and transport stresses.
- Design effective thermal pathways or vents to manage heat from LEDs, motors, and electronic components.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge of both conventional and non-conventional manufacturing processes.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) principles to optimize parts for plastic molding, sheet metal fabrication, and 3D printing based on production volume.
- Conceptualize the manufacturing processes and tools required, including robotics, AI based inspection systems, jigs, fixtures, etc.
- Integrate self-aligning features and fastening strategies that reduce assembly time and errors.
- Rapidly prototype concepts using 3D printing, CNC, Casting and similar technologies.
- Perform cycle testing for mechanisms and device and execute ingress protection and environmental testing as required.
- Maintain detailed and parametric CAD models, technical drawings, and part libraries.
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), exploded views, and tolerance stack-ups to support production readiness.
- Work on developing vendors to support volume production of the designed parts. Have elaborate project planning to ensure deliverables are achieved on time.
Required Background
- B.E. or M.E. in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design Engineering.
- 4 + years experience in product design, preferably in medical devices.
- Hands-on with prototyping, GD&T, and industrial design collaboration.
- Skilled in material selection and tolerance control.
- CAD: SolidWorks, Creo.
- Familiar with IP rating design, drop testing, and vibration specifications.
- FEA for stress/thermal validation (optional).
- Exposure to ISO 13485 documentation for design traceability would be an added advantage
