The Life Sciences R&D department consists of around 200 engineers developing Electron Microscopy (EM) solutions and applications that help our customers make the world cleaner, healthier, and safer. Our global teams-based in Eindhoven (NL), Brno (CZ), Hyderabad (IN), and Bordeaux (FR)-bring together expertise in hardware, software, and scientific applications.
Within this environment, we are strengthening our software capabilities for the cryo-EM workflow and are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead a focused, high-impact team.
The Role
As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of software engineers responsible for the design, development, and lifecycle of a key application within the cryo-EM workflow. This application plays a critical role in enabling scientists to process, analyze, and interpret microscopy data.
This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management with technical leadership. You will guide the team's day-to-day execution while actively shaping architecture, engineering practices, and technical direction.
You will work closely with product owners, scientists, and other engineering teams across sites to deliver high-quality software and continuously improve the way we build and operate our systems.
Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a team ofsoftware engineers
Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture
Support career development, performance management, and continuous learning
Contribute to hiring and onboarding of new team members
Technical Leadership
Provide hands-on technical guidance in software design, architecture, and implementation
Act as a key decision-maker for technical direction and trade-offs within the application
Ensure maintainable, scalable, and robust system design
Contribute to critical parts of the codebase where needed
Engineering Execution
Own end-to-end delivery of the team's application, including planning, development, testing, and release
Collaborate with product management to define scope, priorities, and roadmap
Ensure high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation
Drive predictable and transparent delivery
Engineering Excellence
Promote modern software engineering practices (e.g., CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews)
Continuously improve development processes, tooling, and team efficiency
Ensure system reliability, performance, and maintainability
Collaboration & Impact
Work closely with cross-functional teams, including scientists, application specialists, and other engineering groups
Align with global R&D teams on standards, architecture, and integration points
Contribute to broader engineering initiatives and knowledge sharing across sites
Education and Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
10+ yearsexperience in software development, including experience in a technical leadership or team lead role
Experience managing or mentoring engineers (formal or informal leadership)
Strong understanding of software architecture, design principles, and development practices
Hands-on experience with modern development tools and practices (e.g., version control, CI/CD, automated testing)
Ability to balance hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities
Experience working in cross-functional and/or international environments
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholdersin a global organization
Nice to Have
Experience with scientific software, imaging, or data-intensive applications
Familiarity with Python, C++, or similar languages used in high-performance or scientific computing
Experience working with distributed systems or large datasets
Interest in life sciences, microscopy, or scientific research domains
