What You'll Do
- Lead the design and development of backend systems and RESTful microservices in Python 3 and/or Java, with production-grade quality, security, and observability.
- Architect scalable, resilient, cloud-native services on Azure; optimize cost, performance, and deployment workflows.
- Integrate and productize LLM/AI services (Azure OpenAI and allied technologies) into core business workflows for automation, insights, and decision support.
- Own API contracts, performance SLAs, and reliability across services; drive excellence in testing, CI/CD, logging, and metrics.
- Guide a small team of backend engineers through planning, code reviews, pairing, and mentoring; set engineering standards and best practices.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, data science, and frontend teams to deliver customer-centric outcomes with iterative, agile delivery.
- Ensure data privacy, security controls, and compliance-minded engineering across services and data flows.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues; lead RCAs and prevent regressions through resilient designs and runbooks.
Must-Have Qualifications
- 57 years of backend engineering experience with a track record of shipping production systems at scale.
- Strong expertise in Python 3 and/or Java (Spring Boot preferred), REST API design, and microservices architecture.
- Experience deploying and operating services on Azure (App Services, AKS, Functions, API Management, Storage, monitoring).
- Hands-on experience integrating LLMs/AI services (preferably Azure OpenAI) into backend applications.
- Solid understanding of system design, distributed systems, fault tolerance, caching, message queues, and API security.
- Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and one or more of: Redis, Kafka/Service Bus, Elasticsearch.
- Strong DevOps and automation mindset: CI/CD (GitHub Actions/Azure DevOps), infrastructure as code, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), observability (metrics, logging, tracing).
- Proven ability to lead and mentor engineers, drive execution, and uphold engineering quality.
- Self-driven, ownership-oriented, with excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
Good-to-Have
- Experience with event-driven architectures, idempotency, and exactly-once/at-least-once processing guarantees.
- Familiarity with healthcare data workflows (e.g., payers, EDI, claims), data privacy, and compliance-minded development.
- Experience with graph or vector databases, search, or policy/rules engines.
- Performance engineering: profiling, load testing, capacity planning.
- Security best practices: OAuth2/OIDC, secrets management, key rotation, vulnerability management.
