Job Description

The Junior R&D Chemist supports the development and optimisation of lab-scale processes for ingredients across Flychem's manufacturing portfolio, spanning synthetic and bio-based actives, emulsifiers and emollients, encapsulated and delivery-system products, rheology modifiers, silicones, humectants and UV filters. The role covers hands-on bench experiments, routine analytical testing and accurate documentation, building the experimental and process foundation for a career in ingredient R&D.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out bench-scale experiments and process trials, following defined protocols and recording observations accurately.
  • Prepare samples and standards, and run routine analytical tests — HPLC, GC, titration, Karl Fischer, pH, viscosity and particle-size measurement — and record results against specifications.
  • Assist with small-molecule synthesis and purification, handling and standardisation of biologically derived and peptide-based materials, and emulsifier/emollient and delivery-system trials.
  • Set up and operate laboratory equipment such as mixers/homogenisers, rotary evaporators, filtration and centrifugation units, lab ovens and dryers, and log calibration and maintenance activities.
  • Support pilot batches and scale-up trials, including material preparation and in-process sampling.
  • Maintain clear, complete laboratory notebooks and contribute to development reports, specifications and batch documentation in line with GMP practice.
  • Assist with stability study setup, sample pulls and data recording.
  • Support incoming raw-material and supplier-sample checks.
  • Keep the laboratory organised, stocked and compliant with housekeeping standards.
  • Handle chemicals safely, following SOPs, risk assessments and site EHS requirements.

Required qualifications

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Chemistry / Organic Chemistry / Industrial or Applied Chemistry, or B.Tech in Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a laboratory or ingredient/chemical manufacturing environment.

Required technical skills

  • Foundational laboratory skills: accurate weighing, solution preparation, titration and general wet chemistry.
  • Exposure to instrumental analysis (HPLC, GC, or similar) through coursework, project work or prior experience.
  • Basic understanding of organic and physical chemistry relevant to ingredient development.
  • Ability to follow protocols precisely and maintain accurate records.
  • Comfort operating and maintaining common laboratory equipment.

Preferred / nice-to-have

  • Internship or project experience in cosmetic ingredients, specialty chemicals, fine chemicals or a related manufacturing setting.
  • Exposure to GMP documentation or a regulated laboratory environment.
  • Awareness of Indian cosmetic manufacturing compliance (Cosmetics Rules 2020, BIS, GMP).
  • Familiarity with encapsulation, fermentation or bio-based materials.
