HSBC has built a successful Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities Derivatives Business over several years. Building upon HSBCs strengths (global presence, customer and emerging markets focus) the business has grown to become a major player in the global derivatives market.

The primary aim of the Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities - FICC IT team is to develop and support the IT systems that allow the business to be successful. Calculations and compute function sits across all product lines of the GDM, supporting several products (Credit Default Swaps, Interest Rate Swaps, Bonds etc ) and initiatives. Risk Management is an obvious focus of the team, with direct impact to Front Office. The business also several requirements for functional initiatives (Intraday & EOD Calculations and Scenarios, Regulatory integration, expansion to new products and HSBC sites and many more). These initiatives are tightly aligned with our technical strategy around distributed systems, cloud migration, accessibility and expansion to multiple customers and sites.

The team's ethos is to enable the business to grow and continue to generate revenue by delivering robust and scalable IT systems.

Reducing manual process and operational risk is also a focus. The team operates in a full agile/ DevOps model. We also pride ourselves in promoting a diverse workforce where talented individuals with different backgrounds, personalities and skills can thrive.

You will act as a hands-on engineering consultant to teams across the GDM (Global Debt Markets) space. Your focus will be on helping to drive sensible technology choices/implementations across those teams as well as identifying and engaging in hands on engineering opportunities within the teams.

In This Role, You Will

  • Ability to design, develop and release code into production, with proficiency in working in an agile way with a high empathy for continuous delivery and DevSecOps. Typically will release to production daily if not multiple times per day.
  • Continues to write code and reviews other's code by providing constructive feedback, and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices. Should be comfortable spending 60% of time in hands-on coding and building software solutions, whilst rest in providing technical thought leadership and be a role model to the wider teams.
  • Has a deep awareness of technology, what is happening in the tech community, thinking critically about it and applying that to delivering change.
  • Technology / programming language is not a barrier to getting things done - engineers will typically be polyglot and have no issues with learning on the job. They will have a natural understanding for the core technical skills instead of specific frameworks allowing them to be very diverse in what they can do or what problem solving is thrown at them.
  • Always strives to continue to learn and persuade others to continue to learn as well.
  • Has deep technical expertise and appreciation of system design and engineering practices, underlying infrastructure, tooling and related architecture & design principles
  • Ability to build a case explaining benefits to address technical debt / platform improvement
  • Takes ownership of production - a. build solution with a mindset of supporting it all the way through to production, b. actively participate in assisting with production incidents within and outside of their scope/remit, able to apply experience to identify most important parts of a problem
  • Able to Support, influence and guide engineering teams (including those outside their area) in selecting right technologies, designing technology solutions and implementing necessary engineering controls: able to get buy-in from Product owners / business and development leads in line with Architecture Principles (Asset Class and MSS).
  • This person should be collaborative and able to evidence examples where they have reached beyond their team, both to share best practice and innovative ideas from their own area as well to learn / adopt from others.
