About the Role
We are looking for an Engineering Manager (Ruby on Rails) who will take ownership of backend architecture, technical decision-making, and engineering execution across projects while remaining technically hands-on for core system areas.
This is not a feature-development role.
This is a technical leadership role responsible for converting business goals into reliable engineering systems.
You will act as the technical anchor between product, business stakeholders, and the engineering team.
What You Will Do
1. Architecture & Technical Direction
- Own overall backend architecture and long-term technical roadmap
- Design scalable, secure, and maintainable systems
- Establish engineering standards, coding practices, and review processes
- Identify technical risks early and propose safer alternatives
- Ensure system reliability, performance, and data integrity
2. Requirement Structuring & Stakeholder Translation
- Work with product and business stakeholders to convert ambiguous requirements into clear technical specifications
- Identify missing assumptions before development begins
- Prevent uncontrolled scope changes and rework
3. Hands-On Engineering (Core Systems)
- Remain hands-on for system-critical modules, debugging, and architectural foundations
- Guide complex feature implementation rather than acting as a routine feature developer
- Lead root-cause analysis for production issues
- Oversee database design and performance optimization (Postgres, MongoDB, RedShift)
4. Engineering Enablement
- Mentor developers and guide technical growth
- Conduct architecture and code reviews
- Improve engineering productivity and development practices
- Support hiring and technical evaluations
- Help teams become self-sufficient and consistent
Delivery Ownership & Technical Accountability
- Define implementation approach and technical design before development begins
- Align engineering timelines with feasibility and system constraints
- Flag risks and dependencies early to avoid downstream delays
- Ensure releases meet stability and data integrity standards
- Work with business and client stakeholders to set realistic technical expectations
Required Experience
- 812+ years backend development experience
- Strong Ruby on Rails expertise
- Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL (data modeling & performance)
- Experience designing scalable SaaS platforms
- Experience handling production systems and debugging live failures
- Strong system design and distributed systems understanding
- Experience working directly with non-technical stakeholders
- AWS or comparable cloud infrastructure exposure
Good to Have
- Exposure to GoLang, NodeJs, AI systems, workflow automation, or data pipelines
- DevOps and deployment architecture experience
- Experience improving delivery in fast-changing environments
