The SQL Azure DBA (L2) is responsible for operational management, performance tuning, and security of
Azure SQL Databases, Managed Instances, and Elastic Pools within a managed service environment. The role focuses on ensuring
availability, compliance, and SLA adherence through proactive monitoring, automation, and incident resolution.
This is a
hands-on operational role supporting multiple Azure SQL workloads under managed service contracts.
Key Responsibilities
Azure SQL Administration
- Perform daily health checks, backup verification, and performance monitoring for Azure SQL Databases, Elastic Pools, and Managed Instances.
- Manage user access, roles, and authentication via Entra ID / Azure AD.
- Configure and maintain database auditing, threat detection, and alerts through Azure Monitor and Log Analytics.
- Monitor DTU/vCore usage, query performance, and IO metrics; recommend scaling or indexing improvements.
- Implement and manage geo-replication, automated backups, and long-term retention policies.
- Ensure database configurations align with security and compliance requirements (TDE, data masking, etc.).
Operational Support & Incident Management
- Respond to database-related incidents, alerts, and change requests raised via ITSM tools (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira ServiceDesk).
- Troubleshoot connectivity, performance, and authentication issues within SLA timelines.
- Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for high-severity incidents and document preventive measures.
- Participate in on-call rotation for 247 managed service operations.
Automation & Optimization
- Develop PowerShell, T-SQL, or Azure CLI scripts for automating repetitive administrative tasks.
- Optimize database performance through indexing, statistics updates, and parameter tuning.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of monitoring and alerting workflows.
Security & Compliance
- Maintain least-privilege access models and regularly review permissions.
- Integrate audit logs with centralized monitoring (e.g., Log Analytics, Sentinel, or Defender for SQL).
- Support compliance reporting and SoD validation for ISO 27001 / SOC2 environments.
